STEM Sessions: Term 4, 2017.

Picture
This is the last term in a two year (8 term) cycle of STEM. To celebrate, the children in all stages will have the opportunity to experience a mix of scientific investigations and building challenges. Unlike previous units, there will be no particular content theme. Instead, we will focus on the processes and skills of working scientifically and technologically.

The table below lists some of the activities planned for each stage:

Stage 1 (Grade 2)

  • Harness the power of steam (we understand how our model steam engine runs)
  • Design and make a potato carrier
  • Devise a test to measure: How strong are different kinds of magnets?
  • Build a boat to carry the heaviest cargo

Stage 2 (Grades 3 and 4)

  • Identify the purpose and appreciate the design of various existing tools and technologies
  • Design and make a device to pick up an object from the floor
  • Investigate capillary action
  • Design and make a scale to weigh postal items

As usual, kindergartens will continue with their 30 minutes of STEM per week.

Stage 3 (Grades 5 and 6)

  • Design and make a model of the human hand
  • Dissect a flower and identify its parts
  • Devise an experiment to measure the bounce of different types of balls
  • Participate in a LEGO challenge
Time permitting, Year 6 will also organise a STEM Fair for children in the other classes.
