Sustainability Education.
The graph below shows eight actions for sustainability ranked by 21 staff members (where "1" is "what I would most like the school to do" and "8" is "what I would least like the school to do"). The horizontal bars show the median ranks. The full questionnaire text follows the graph. Staff are aware that the school has already begun to take steps towards some of these actions.
At the sustainability conference, one of the panellists was asked by the moderator, "What needs to be done?" He answered that we know what we need to do. By the same token, all these surveyed actions are important but, in practise, it is necessary to prioritise or stage them.
A number of ideas were added to those listed on the questionnaire. They included, in no particular order: promotion of "nude food"; having an automatic cut-off for lights as well as for air conditioning; monitoring electricity bills and implementing strategies to reduce energy use; choice of school supplies favouring recycled or eco-products (e.g. toilet or copy paper); food grown in school grounds included in canteen food; sponsoring people or developments in third world countries; encouraging families to walk to school.
Sustainability is also a key topic within the new National Curriculum. For more information.from ACARA, click here.
