Current STEM Sessions
Stage 1 (Grades 1 and 2)The diversity of life on earth is astounding. Students will come to share this understanding by exploring the features of living things and how animals can be classified. A digital microscope will help us observe the features of insects. At the other end of the scale, we will learn about whales and realise why they are mammals and not fish.
Courtesy of "Living Eggs", we will learn about the needs of newly hatched chicks. We will appreciate that human beings, too, depend on their environment for their needs. |
Stage 2 (Grades 3 and 4)What is heat and how does it change the properties of various substances?
We will make a water thermometer to help us understand how a traditional thermometer works. There will be a challenge involving the heating of water. There will also be an opportunity to run a model steam engine and understand its workings. This will help demonstrate how the change of water from liquid to steam can be harnessed by machines. From an understanding of the science came the technology vital to the Industrial Revolution. |
Stage 3 (Grades 5 and 6)Students develop knowledge, understanding of and skills in applying the processes of Working Technologically. They are instructed to complete a number of challenging builds. They will work collaboratively, make plans, carry out the building work, and reflect upon how successful they have been.
Which group can make the highest structure? The car which can travel furthest? The bridge which can support the most weight? There are timing and material constraints so it won't be easy! |
