Today, Professor Tracey Rogers visited Year 5 at Our Lady of Good Counsel School. She talked about what inspired her to be a scientist and she also talked about the animals and herself. Professor Tracey Rogers has been a zoo keeper taking care of different kinds of seals and doing the shows. A few years later, she wanted to be a marine biologist. Professor Rogers went to the University of New South Wales where she learnt how to be a scientist. When Professor Rogers went to Antarctica, her Russian ship got stuck in the ice.When she got to Antarctica, she learnt about the different kinds of seals and penguins and what they ate. She found out that the seals were eating lots of krill. She found that out by taking a seal's whisker and researching what the seal had eaten. When Professor Rogers was in Queensland she dived with crocodiles. She said that she had been to Antarctica 12 times. She also found out that global warming is changing Antarctica. In class, we started reading a book called “Staying Alive in Year Five”. This story is about a boy called Scott, who starts a year with a new teacher called Mr Murlin. But strange things start to happen. For example, the class comes back from recess and they find their tubs full of live fish. Another time, Mr Murlin comes to school with a miniature house. As Scott and his classmates watch the house, the people inside it start to move. I think this book is very interesting. If you read it, I bet you would like it as much as I did. This from Maddie: These last two weeks we have been reading a novel called “Staying Alive in Year 5”. Written from one boy's perspective, he is telling the reader about his first term in Year 5. The reason the book is so funny and interesting is because there is a new teacher called Mr Murlin who does certain things that make him unusual such as: make a real aquarium inside the children's desks, keep a chainsaw in the cupboard in case they're extremely naughty and makes it compulsory to eat bubblegum in class. With his friend Johnny they discover a lot more about Mr Murlin, there are more stories that involve a heart attack, an angry Principal, and an office tied completely up with string. What a first term in Year 5 that would be, and the end …wait I can't spoil it for you!!! I totally loved this book and recommened it and I think you would to. Neise wrote:
My first day at school in Year Five First, I walk in to my lovely school. I then find my friends and we go to our line. After lining up, our teacher lets us go in to the wonderful class room and he tells us a bit about himself. Then we introduce ourselves to him. We all then listen as he reads us a book called, "Staying Alive in Year Five." PS it is very funny. After the story we go into groups of two to write some rules for the classroom. I got to team up with my friend Madison. Caitlin, too, seems to be enjoying John Marsden's book and one of the writing activities inspired by its main character, Mr Murlin: My favourite thing was writing a persuasive text about why I am not a boring person. I am excited and know this year is going to be fun. Daniel says he is looking forward to a successful year. He wrote: In the last few days, I couldn't wait to see my new teacher, my new class and friends. Now I am so happy and looking forward to year 5. In the first few days, we have played some games. We have learned about lots of different patterns such as square numbers, triangle numbers and much more.
